ADMISSIONS

Eight women share their experiences of life in a public hospital in Aotearoa. These are fictional narratives of doctors, nurses, cooks and cleaners. They are also intimate confessions of mothers, daughters, friends, lovers and the connections that shape their lives.

Admissions shows women working as doctors, nurses, cooks and cleaners, keeping the hospital operating – while battling the challenges which are part of their daily lives. These linked tales are personal and intimate accounts of work at the heart of clinical medicine, in an institution which connects, binds and yet frustrates the people who have devoted their lives to caring.

UNESCO’s Cities of Literature – a group that includes Durban in South Africa, Manchester in the UK and Baghdad in Iraq – included ADMISSIONS in its 7 selected novels and true-life stories on key SDG themes, including poverty, hunger and sustainability.

Reviews

These eight women’s stories are engaging and honest and will resonate not just with New Zealanders, but with people who, like me, live on the other side of the world.

“I loved the stories, the dialogue, and especially the way each voice rang so true.”
