Eight women share their experiences of life in a public hospital in Aotearoa. These are fictional narratives of doctors, nurses, cooks and cleaners. They are also intimate confessions of mothers, daughters, friends, lovers and the connections that shape their lives.
Admissions shows women working as doctors, nurses, cooks and cleaners, keeping the hospital operating – while battling the challenges which are part of their daily lives. These linked tales are personal and intimate accounts of work at the heart of clinical medicine, in an institution which connects, binds and yet frustrates the people who have devoted their lives to caring.
UNESCO’s Cities of Literature – a group that includes Durban in South Africa, Manchester in the UK and Baghdad in Iraq – included ADMISSIONS in its 7 selected novels and true-life stories on key SDG themes, including poverty, hunger and sustainability.

About Mira
Mira began her career working in NHS hospitals in the UK, and later worked in public hospitals in NZ, before becoming an academic researcher and government advisor on medicines’ safety.
In October 2019 Mira was elected President of International Society of Pharmacovigilance – the first woman to ever hold this position.
Mira has authored over 70 research publications and in 2017, her first medical textbook Medicines for Women was published by Springer International. This was followed in 2017 by the second edition of An Introduction to Pharmacovigilance, published by John Wiley and Sons UK.
