LAP OF HONOUR

LAP OF HONOUR by Tim Hain

Driven by Tim’s photographs, which span 56 years, Lap Of Honour offers stories, anecdotes and interviews with legends from that era; notably Bette Hill, Sir John Whitmore, and Stirling himself.

It captures the action, fun, and glory of the Goodwood Revival and culminates in a portrait of Moss in modern times, photographed in 33 cars with his input on each, and over 20 tributes including Mark Knopfler, David Coulthard and Murray Walker.

Created without press privileges, LAP OF HONOUR is an intimate and genuine ‘fan’s eye view’ making this unlike any other book on Motor Racing.

Short-listed for the Telegraph Illustrated Sports Book of the Year 2020.

About Tim

“On Easter Monday 1962 I attended my first motor race. My hero Stirling Moss crashed and almost lost his life. It was a harsh baptism for an 11 year old schoolboy but I was hooked…”

Come September, at sunny Crystal Palace, Tim borrowed his mother’s Kodak Retina and took his first racing pictures. Three years later, with his own single lens reflex camera and darkroom, he won the British Automobile Racing Club’s “Motofoto” contest for the third time, and had pictures published in several magazines. He was just 14.

He gave it all up at 16, caving to parental pressure to enrol him for Oxford. He failed. When Jimi Hendrix arrived, he taught himself electric guitar and drifted off in another direction. This led to a career playing thousands of gigs, and awakened his love of performing and writing his own songs, working with many top songwriters.

In 1998 his passion was  re-born with the Goodwood Revival. A picture of Stirling Moss in action led to a life-changing meeting with “The Maestro”.

Reviews

“LAP OF HONOUR is a lot of fun. Tim really brings back memories…above all, his pictures are really great. I’m amazed he has never held a press pass.”

– Sir Stirling Moss

“If a life could be measured in pound notes, Stirling is surely one of the richest men in the world.”

– Jay Leno

“What a marvellous tribute to Sir Stirling. Stirling is not only a great friend but he is of course ‘Mister Goodwood’, and this is certainly very much reflected in the wonderful photos you have gathered. Very many congratulations on a fantastic book – so many special memories, for us both!”

– The 11th Duke of Richmond

“Almost all of it covers Moss’ recent career in Historics, with lovely paddock and people shots, and good action stuff. The text is the fruit of hours of chat, opinions and anecdotes from The Man, plus tributes from a host of friends – from Jochen Mass to Mark Knopfler, Mark Webber to Jay Leno. A very personal book about one man’s friendship, and for a well-printed large-format 416 pages it’s excellent value.”
