WHEN THE BRITISH MUSICAL RULED THE WORLD by Robert Sellers to Applause Books

World Rights to Robert Sellers’ new book have gone to Applause Books.

This book focuses on the big ‘7,’ mega productions of the 80s, British musicals that were larger than life, colourful and spectacular, shows that certainly paved the way for the ‘event’ musicals of recent years such as The Lion King and Wicked.

Evita ran for seven years in the West End and four years on Broadway and ushered in an era when for over a decade Britain dominated musical theatre all over the world with blockbusting productions that were international hits, notably Cats, Starlight Express, Les Misérables, Phantom of The Opera, Chess and Miss Saigon.

For the very first time, many of the artists will celebrate and tell this extraordinary period in British musical history, both behind and in front of the curtain. And many of the stories of backstage dramas, production nightmares, and financial woes have never been told before.

Contributors include Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, Cameron Mackintosh, Michael Crawford, Elaine Paige, Wayne Sleep, David Essex, Michael Ball, Abba’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, Sarah Brightman, Barbara Dickson, Trevor Nunn & Patti LuPone.

Robert Sellers is the author of the best-selling ‘Hellraisers: The Life and Inebriated Times of Burton, Harris, O’Toole and Reed,’ and the authorised biographies of Peter O’Toole, Oliver Reed, Ernie Wise, and Kenny Everett. He has written histories of Ealing Studios and the George Harrison/Monty Python film company HandMade Films. He also ghost-wrote the autobiographies of Martin Edwards, ex-chairman of Manchester United, and Vic Armstrong, the world’s most prolific stuntman.

The book will publish late 2022.

Audio Rights for FOLEY: THE SPY WHO SAVED 10,000 JEWS to Blackstone

Blackstone Audio snapped up audio rights in an exclusive submission for Station X and Killer Elite author Michael Smith’s FOLEY: THE SPY WHO SAVED 10,000 JEWS, a story of courage and quiet heroism in the face of great evil – a reminder of the impact that one brave individual can have on the lives of many.

As the horror of Nazism tightened its grip on Germany, Jews found themselves trapped and desperate; for many, their only hope of salvation came in the form of a small, bespectacled British man: Frank Foley.

Working as a Berlin Passport Control Officer, Foley helped thousands of Jews to flee the country with visas and false passports, personally entering the camps to get Jews out, and sheltering those on the run from the Gestapo in his own apartment. Described by a Jewish leader as ‘the Pimpernel of the Jews’, Foley was an unsung hero of the Holocaust.

But why is this extraordinary man virtually unknown, even in Britain? The reason is simple: Foley was MI6 head of station in Berlin, bound to secrecy by the code of his profession.

Founded in 1987, Blackstone Audio is one of the largest independent audiobook publishers in the United States, offering over 30,000 audiobooks. The company is based in Ashland, Oregon with five in-house recording studios.

MY FAMILY AND OTHER ENEMIES by Mary Novakovich to Bradt Guides

World Rights have gone to Bradt Guides for journalist Mary Novakovich’s MY FAMILY AND OTHER ENEMIES, a part travelogue, part memoir that dives into the hinterland of Croatia.

The region of Lika, where her Serbian parents were born, is little known to most travellers – apart from Plitvice Lakes National Park and the birthplace of Nikola Tesla. This book weaves the author’s deep family connection to the region in Croatia with stories of people whose experiences had never been reported during the 1990s, when the devastation in Croatia was quickly superseded by the Bosnian conflict and media attention moved elsewhere.

2022 marks 30 years since the beginning of the war in neighbouring Bosnia, and the book will be published in August 2022.

Mary Novakovich is an award-winning freelance journalist and travel writer based in Hertfordshire. For more than 35 years, she has worked as a journalist, including at the BBC, before going freelance in 1997. Since 1999, she has been focusing on travel writing and contributes regularly to UK publications including the Guardian, Telegraph, Independent, Times, Evening Standard and many others. She is also the contributing travel editor of The Lady magazine.

Born to Serbian parents from Croatia, she has written extensively about the countries of the former Yugoslavia, in particular Croatia and Serbia, which she first visited in 1976. She has written several guidebooks on Croatia for Insight Guides and Berlitz over the years. She also reported on a story for From Our Own Correspondent for BBC World Service in December 2011, about her aunt who became the only survivor of a 1941 massacre of a village by the Croats, in which her great-grandmother perished. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00m5f9b.

GOD IN NUMBER 10 by Fr Mark Vickers to SPCK Publishing

World Rights have been sold to SPCK for Parish priest in West London Fr. Mark Vickers’s GOD IN NUMBER 10, a study of the faith of the 20th-century British Prime Ministers, addressing the role of religion in the political classes of the period, the reasons for the declining influence of faith in the public forum, and the relationship between church and state.

Surprising instances are revealed, including Balfour and MacDonald’s recourse to spiritualism; Baldwin’s mystical experiences, and Churchill’s involvement with astrology. The work rectifies the lacuna of most political biographies relating to an important—sometimes the most important—aspect of the individual’s life.

Faith defined the reigns of many of our kings and queens. The faith of the Prime Ministers, however, has been largely overlooked by historians. This carefully researched and well-written study reveals the religious faith of our Prime Ministers, or lack of it, in vivid colours. Prepare to be shocked and surprised as the author lays bare their souls.”  –– Sir Anthony Seldon.

Having studied for the priesthood at the English College in Rome, Mark was ordained for the Diocese of Westminster in 2003. He is currently a parish priest in West London. He has previously published two biographies and is the author of Reunion Revisited: 1930s Ecumenism Exposed (Gracewing, 2017).

With the assistance of John Major and others, the book will be published in the latter half of 2022.

SPCK Publishing won IPG Specialist Consumer Publisher of the Year 2017, 2018, 2019, and the CRT Awards Publisher of the Year & Book of the Year 2018, 2019, 2021.

THE OTHER SIDE OF TRUST by Neil Robinson to Burning Chair Publishing

Former Home Office employee Neil Robinson’s spy thriller THE OTHER SIDE OF TRUST has gone to Burning Chair Publishers for World English Rights.

When the three leaders of an opposition group to Iran’s Islamic regime are all murdered within 48 hours of each other in Cambridge, Hamburg, and New York, an MI6 agent is sent to Tehran but finds his instincts rebelling against the evidence in the deadliest mission of his life.

Robinson now works for Lord’s Cricket Ground where he has remained for the last 15 years currently as the MCC’s Head of Heritage & Collections, where, among other things, his job involves looking after the Ashes Urn.

He has written widely about cricket and sporting heritage for a variety of publications and in 2015 published Long Shot Summer, a book about one of the most humiliating years in English cricket history. His fiction writing covers very different ground. A lifelong lover of spy novels, he takes inspiration from thriller writers like Len Deighton and John Buchan and seeks to create novels with a sense of place and character.

Burning Chair recently published former spy John Fullerton’s successful spy novel series.

ALISTAIR MACLEAN’S WAR by Mark Simmons to Pen & Sword

World Rights have gone to Pen & Sword for a biography of Scottish thriller writer Alistair MacLean’s early years in the Royal Navy and its influence on his most famous works.

Alistair MacLean

Alistair MacLean’s first novel HMS Ulysses sold a quarter of a million copies in hardback in the first six months and sold millions, enabling him to become one of Scotland’s most prolific and successful writers.

Lee Child was heavily influenced by that book and commented in 2005 that ‘it had some of the best-drawn characters I had read in the genre…. Even today I can sense MacLean’s influence I learnt a valuable lesson in how to write a hero who is totally full-blooded without going over the top.’

With the centenary of MacLean’s birth in 2022, this book will serve as a timely reminder of the significant influence this Scottish writer had on future generations of thriller writers.

The book will be published in hardback with a Foreword by Lee Child and unpublished MacLean material.

A TASTE FOR TREASON by Andrew Jeffrey to Birlinn

World Rights have been sold to Scottish publisher Birlinn for A TASTE FOR TREASON – Breaking Nazi Spy Rings in Europe and the United States by Dr. Andrew Jeffrey.

This is the dramatic, untold story of how a Nazi spy’s letter, posted in New York and intercepted in Scotland, broke spy rings across Europe and North America.

This story has never been told in its entirety and benefitting from forensic new research, the book follows parallel Nazi spy plots in the UK and USA as they converged on a Scottish post office in 1938 and triggered an unprecedented international counter-espionage investigation that kick-started today’s Anglo-American intelligence and security alliance.

It is set against a dramatic background of mounting international tension and shot through with spy fact and fiction staples such as seedy traitors, alluring femmes fatales, sinister Nazi thugs, Hollywood movie stars, violent deaths, and evocative locations.

Dr Andrew Jeffrey is an established author and historian who brings experience and authority to the project. Glasgow-born, he has a history Ph.D. from St Andrews University and has written academic papers, articles and features on military and maritime history. He undertakes regular speaking engagements and has worked in radio, television and on social media and is also a former sea fisherman, Royal Navy reservist and RNLI lifeboat coxswain.

Birlinn Limited is an independent publishing house based in Edinburgh, Scotland established in 1992.
